PRESS RELEASE

COLUMBUS, OHIO, December 12, 2016 – Brown Logistics Solutions, Inc., a privately-owned Columbus-based third party logistics company, announced the roll-out of its new division, Lifestyle Transitions Solutions, LLC, that will provide residential move management services to empty nesters and seniors.

“In Greater Columbus, households with adults 65 and older are expected to grow by 56% from 2010 to 2030,” stated Robert Hunt, President of Brown Logistics Solutions, referring to research that has been conducted by the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University as well as other studies. “Our services are designed to make downsizing and moving into smaller quarters, such as senior living communities, easy and affordable,” he continued.

Lifestyle Transitions Solutions’ services include downsizing and decluttering, moving, shipping, short-term storage, management of charitable donations, shredding, auctions and online sales, and estate dispersals.

“While other senior move management companies in the region provide similar services, there are several things that set us apart,” said Deanna DeSmet, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. “’Many companies in the industry outsource the actual moving services to other companies, but these services as well as all others that are mission-critical to our clients’ moves will be handled in house. This, combined with
Brown’s extensive experience in residential moves and use of best practices can reduce costs as well as the risk of errors and damages.”

Brown, which was established in Columbus in 1914, entered the household moving industry after World War II and served as an agent for National Van Lines and North American Van Lines. The company has more than 50 years of residential moving experience as well as several assets, including a large fleet of trucks, a 151,000 square foot warehouse, shipping and packing expertise through its Pak Mail franchise, and a team of experienced professionals.

“We have helped thousands of Columbus’ residents move into their new homes and look forward to serving the unique needs of empty nesters and seniors with our comprehensive senior move management services,” Hunt said.

"It was my pleasure to work with Lifestyle Transitions Solutions on two separate occasions. They tagged  and picked up a large amount of furniture, framed pictures, and glassware, and shipped to several family locations on the east and  west coasts. The items arrived in the condition they were sent.

Lifestyle Transition Solutions, additionally, took the shredding and donation items. I highly recommend Lifestyle Transition Solutions for their customer service, quick response, efficiency, and quality of the packing."

Zeroing in on the Senior Move Trend

Brown Logistics Distinguishing itself from competition by chasing niche

BY TOM KNOX

A Columbus logistics company more than a century old has launched a side business focusing on the elderly.

Brown Logistics Solutions formed a division called Lifestyle Transition Solutions that targets moving and related services for people as they age.
There’s a big market to be had – about 75.4 million people born between 1945 and 1964, the Baby Boomers, are living longer than ever.

That’s where the company saw an opening. Management was looking for a way to differentiate itself from the competition, and new vice president Deanna DeSmet came in to the family – owned business with the idea. She ran a market study that revealed Brown Logistics was already doing most of the work involved in moving seniors.

“They’re moving into senior-living facilities, experiencing a lot of massive changes – it’s a very difficult moment in life,” DeSmet said. “We took a look at the different services we have with moving and shipping and storage and so on and decided to customize our services to reach that market.”

There’s more involved in these types of moves than a family moving from one neighborhood to another. First, there’s the sheer amount of stuff collected over decades of living. What once was an existence at a five-bedroom home could morph into a condo, apartment, and senior living facility or house half the size.

“We know how to declutter,” said President Rob Hunt, citing an “Archie Bunker chair” that someone’s father may have sat in for years that fit into a bigger space but may not work once the person moves. Lifestyle Transitions helps with auctions, charity donations and online sales.

There are some unnecessary items a moving senior citizen may not even know they don’t need – some senior living centers don’t have stoves, for example, so cookware isn’t needed. Condos don’t need lawn equipment or shovels, either.

Navigating family dynamics and stress is another service the company touts but isn’t something to be found on its brochure – but it has to be done. Hunt said that in these kinds of moves, employees almost act as therapists.

“We’ve seen just about everything there is in the moving business, and there’s been studies that say moving is the most stressful thing next to death,” he said. “It’s a lot of hand-holding and people that need somebody to talk to.”

There are competitors in this space, though Hunt said his company is different because it doesn’t contract any work out. Marketing in this niche involved working with real estate agents, estate planners, probate attorneys and groups geared toward senior citizens.

The division has made about two dozen moves since operations began in September. Hunt expects it to be a major growth engine for Brown in the next five years, growing to as much as 60 percent of the business.

Double Briefing: Lifestyle Transitions Solutions Created to Help Empty the Nest

Division of Brown Logistics Solutions aims to provide all services necessary for downsizing.

By CHLOE TEASLEY

Brown Logistics Solutions has a new division to help economizing an estate move along more quickly. Lifestyle Transitions Solutions I not the only central Ohio company touting this service, but it offers a holistic approach to downsizing by providing all critical amenities instead of outsourcing. A logistics bent lasting 103 years doesn’t hurt either.

“Most senior move management companies outsource their clients’ moves to residential moving companies. Lifestyle Transitions Solutions is unique because it is a full-service moving company. In addition to having a team of experienced professionals and our own fleet of trucks, all services that are mission-critical to our clients’ moves are handled in-house,” says President Robert Hunt.

Services include short-term storage, decluttering, moving and shipping – informed by a Pak Mail franchise – shredding, estate dispersals, auctions and online sales, and management of charitable donations. Clients need to communication with only one senior move manager, who then synchronizes the various services.

Columbus will see households of adults 65 and older growing by 56 percent from 2010 to 2030. The division was created to meet the coming demand.

Coincidentally, Hunt and his wife are new empty nesters. “Although we’re not ready to downsize and move into a smaller place yet, I kept thinking about how difficult this must be for empty nesters and seniors to do on their own. Our goal is to make this process and transitioning into their new lifestyles as easy as possible.”
